A Vision Inspired by Vacation

The homeowners were faced with a steep backyard they were not sure how to use. After completing a beautiful new deck, they wanted the space beyond it to feel just as intentional. Their vision was clear. They wanted a peaceful, beach-inspired landscape with the sound of water, easy upkeep, and a relaxed coastal feel that made everyday life feel like a getaway.

Our goal was to transform a challenging slope into a space that felt calm, cohesive, and effortless to enjoy.

Design Approach and Layout

Rather than fighting the natural grade of the yard, the design leaned into it. The slope became the perfect setting for a cascading water feature and layered plantings that feel organic and natural.

The layout was carefully planned so the main focal point, a pondless waterfall, could be enjoyed from multiple viewpoints. Positioned within sight of the kitchen window and deck, the water feature brings movement and sound into the space whether the homeowners are indoors or outside.

Two flagstone paths were added to guide movement through the landscape, offering access while creating natural pause points to stop and take in the view.

Materials and Craftsmanship

The centerpiece of the design is a twelve-foot pondless waterfall that flows naturally down the hillside. By eliminating a standing pond, the feature delivers the soothing sound of water without ongoing maintenance concerns.

To support the coastal aesthetic, Miscanthus grass was used throughout the slope to create a soft, breezy feel reminiscent of seaside landscapes. Color and seasonal interest were added with crape myrtle, Pugster Amethyst butterfly bush, and creeping phlox, all selected for their durability and low-maintenance performance.

Natural fieldstone boulders were placed strategically throughout the hillside. These stones serve a dual purpose, acting as visual anchors while creating stable planting pockets that help manage erosion and support long-term plant health.

Mulch and pine straw replaced turf on the slope, eliminating the need for mowing while improving erosion control and overall ease of maintenance.

The Process

This project required careful coordination due to tight access points and the steep grade of the yard. Smaller equipment and thoughtful sequencing allowed the work to move efficiently without compromising craftsmanship.

Clear planning and communication kept the project on track, resulting in a complete transformation over four days while maintaining a clean, organized job site throughout the process.

The Finished Space

The completed landscape feels like a private coastal retreat tucked into the backyard. The sound of the waterfall adds a calming backdrop, while the soft movement of ornamental grasses and layered plantings creates a relaxed, beachy atmosphere.

With no mowing required and minimal upkeep, the homeowners can focus on enjoying the space rather than maintaining it. Whether they are relaxing on the deck, watching the waterfall from the kitchen window, or strolling along the flagstone paths, the backyard now feels like a place to unwind and recharge.

Thoughtful Design Makes the Difference

By combining natural materials, intentional design, and low-maintenance solutions, this steep hillside was transformed into a functional and inviting outdoor living space.

Every Willow Ridge project is approached with the same goal. To create landscapes that feel effortless to live in and built to last.
