A Fresh Start for the Front of the Home
This project began with a common challenge in newly built homes. The front yard lacked curb appeal, grass struggled to grow, and compacted soil left behind weeds, rocks, and bare patches instead of a healthy lawn.
The homeowners wanted a front yard that felt welcoming and finished. Their goals were simple but important. Improve curb appeal, create a lush lawn that would actually thrive, and address underlying grade and soil issues so the space would remain healthy long after installation.
Design Approach and Layout
The solution focused on correcting the foundation of the landscape before adding surface beauty. Existing builder-grade shrubs and debris were removed to create a clean slate. An eighteen-inch retaining wall was introduced along the front landscape beds to manage grade changes, prevent erosion, and define the space visually.
With proper structure in place, the yard could be regraded and prepared to support healthy turf growth. The layout was designed to feel natural and proportional to the home, creating a front yard that enhances the architecture rather than competing with it.
Materials and Craftsmanship
The retaining wall was constructed using Belgard Highland Stone in the color Sheffield, finished with a four-inch cap. This material was chosen for its durability and clean, timeless appearance, offering both structural support and visual definition to the landscape beds.
Soil improvement was a critical part of this project. Fresh topsoil was added to relieve compaction and create an environment where grass roots could establish properly. After final grading, tall fescue sod was installed in a staggered pattern to encourage strong root development and even coverage.
Careful watering and finishing ensured the sod had the best possible start, setting the stage for a healthy, green lawn.
Addressing the Challenges
Grass had consistently failed in this yard due to compacted soil and poor growing conditions. By addressing the underlying issues rather than applying a temporary fix, the new lawn was given the structure it needed to thrive.
Integrating the retaining wall with the surrounding sod required thoughtful planning to ensure everything flowed together visually. By selecting materials that complemented the home and prioritizing proper preparation, the front yard now feels cohesive, balanced, and intentional.
The Finished Space
The transformation resulted in a front yard that feels complete and inviting. The retaining wall adds structure and definition, while the new sod creates a lush, green lawn that contrasts beautifully with the home’s exterior.
What was once a problem area is now easy to maintain, visually appealing, and welcoming from the street. The homeowners are excited to watch the lawn continue to establish and grow stronger over time.
Thoughtful Design Makes the Difference
This three-day transformation delivered more than a visual upgrade. By correcting grade, improving soil conditions, and installing quality materials, the front yard was rebuilt for long-term success.
Every Willow Ridge project is approached with the same attention to detail and care, creating landscapes that look good now and perform well for years to come.
